Certificates for Degree-Seeking Students
Many of our students add a specialization to their master's degree by completing one of our certificate programs. The certificate options listed below are open only to degree-seeking students. Please note that we also offer professional certificates for non-degree seeking (or special standing) students.
Students may not count required coursework for their degree program towards a certificate, with the exception of electives. Examples of what may not "double count" include:
- For GH or Global Epidemiology students’ classes that are being used to fulfill the “GH Methods” Requirement of their degree. The most overlap in these requirements are seen in WASH and CHE Certificates.
- For any Epidemiology or Global Epidemiology students, classes that are fulfilling the “Substantive” or “Methods” selective may not be used towards a certificate.
- For EH and GEH students, EH 520, “Toxicology,” may not be used as an elective course for GME or any other certificate program.
- For HPM students, HPM 502 may not be used to count towards any certificate requirements.
- For BSHES students, no BSHES required courses such as BSHES 532, BSHES 538, or BSHES 539 can count towards any certificate requirement.
Current students can find recorded information sessions for each certificate program here. Additional information can also be found in the certificate program sections below.

The Certificate in Climate and Health positions students to be leaders in what the World Health Organization has called “the defining issue of the 21st century.” Students participating in this certificate program will benefit from Emory University’s substantial strengths and connections in the field of climate change and will develop an understanding of research, programmatic, and policy tools required to address the health impacts of climate change.
The rise of data science has driven advances in technology across almost all areas of our life, including health. Students in the Data Science certificate program at RSPH will be trained to meet the needs of a rapidly advancing health research field. Pursuing data science training within a top public health school will allow students to see how modern data science can be used towards advancing the public good, rather than increasing corporate profits.
Through coursework, their Applied Practice Experience, and their Integrative Learning Experience, genetic and molecular epidemiology certificate students will gain mastery of study design, data analysis, and interpretation of results pertaining to the use of genetic and molecular data in research and public health programming.
Rollins, in partnership with CDC's Emergency Response and Recovery Branch, offers a graduate certificate in humanitarian emergencies. The certificate combines the teaching and research strengths of Emory University with the applied technical skills of the CDC Emergency Response and Recovery Branch. The certificate is open to Rollins students and to other Emory graduate health schools on a case-by-case basis.
The graduate certificate in human rights is an integrated, innovative, and cooperative approach to human rights scholarship and training.
The certificate combines the teaching and research strengths of Emory University with the applied programs of our professional partners, including CARE USA, The Carter Center, and the CDC. Faculty in several schools at Emory—including Emory College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Law, the Rollins School of Public Health, the Goizueta Business School, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and the Candler School of Theology—have been involved in building an academic human rights program.
Infectious disease epidemiology incorporates the fundamental principle that a person’s risk of infection often depends on the disease status of another person or disease prevalence at the population level. Therefore, events are not independent, violating a key assumption of classic epidemiological methods and requiring a different set of methods to approach infectious diseases. Students in the Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology program will learn how to apply epidemiological methods to study and address infectious diseases and critically assess the science and public health interventions for infectious disease control.
The certificate in injury & violence prevention is designed to give MPH and doctoral students a foundation in theoretical and epidemiologic concepts of injury prevention and control and a platform from which to examine the causes, consequences, and prevention strategies used in our society. Combining multidisciplinary coursework, research, practical experience, and access to a vast injury prevention network, this certificate will broaden students' perspectives on a complex issue while preparing them to become leaders of injury prevention within their chosen discipline.
The certificate in maternal and child health aims to equip students to become professionals for positions in governmental and non-governmental public health organizations serving women, infants, and children at local, regional, national, and international levels.
The interdepartmental certificate in mental health program addresses the interface of mental health and public health. This certificate is intended to enhance the competencies of students concentrating on master's degrees in any of the school's departmental programs. Students completing the program will be able to epidemiologically describe the burden of mental illness on society, apply theories and evaluate empirical evidence on determinants of mental health, design and critique interventions intended to promote mental health, and identify the sources of financing and public policies that affect mental health services.
The certificate in the social determinants of health is designed to create an intellectual and professional home for Rollins master's students who have a strong scholarly commitment to studying and intervening in the social determinants of health. This certificate provides a range of academic, research, and professional development opportunities to strengthen students' abilities to advance the public's health by developing and implementing studies of, and interventions into, the social determinants of population health and well-being. This certificate program may be of particular interest to students who are committed to supporting community well-being by advancing social justice and eradicating health disparities.
The certificate in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) at Rollins is offered through the Center for Global Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene and aims to train graduate students to be competitive for WASH-related careers. The program is a combination of WASH-related coursework; completion of a WASH-related thesis, capstone, and/or practicum; and attendance of Center for Global Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene-sponsored seminars. This is a rigorous self-guided certificate program open to all Rollins students.
