APPLIED EXPERIENCES

HDGH embraces a GLOCAL vision which bridges the global with the local setting in seeking to understand and respond to health issues. Below are examples of GLOCAL experiences our students engage in.

APPLIED PRACTICE EXPERIENCES (APE)

picture of Chelsea Cole

Chelsea Cole is a second year Rollins student and for her APE she used National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey data to conduct an updated estimate of iron deficiency in the U.S. using recommended biomarkers (ferritin adjusted for inflammation) and estimation (full probability) techniques. She also collaborated with colleagues to add dietary intake data to the analysis.

In collaboration with Stanford University (USA) and Modern University for Business and Science (Lebanon), MPH students Rana Sulieman, Natalie Hakim, and Nushrat Nur, participated in the design of virtual reality tools and a corresponding curriculum that will enable the remote assessment of living conditions of Syrian refugee populations in Lebanon. The curriculum and the virtual reality tools are being finalized for deployment in educational programs (public health and others) around the world.

Xiao Bin Zhu transformed her APE into her thesis where she is doing research on COVID-19 and diabetes. "The background knowledge about how methods of nutrition assessment were done gave me a better understanding of the research participants and certain parts of their healthcare," said Zhu.

CAPSTONE OR THESIS

Coralis Rodriguez GH MPH published her thesis, “Health Communications for Migrant Produce Workers in the U.S.” and this was used as a resource to protect farm workers from COVID-19 by the Western Regional Center for Food Safety.

Caleb Hartley, recent HDGH MPH graduate, is getting ready to publish his thesis on Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Scoping Review Using the Theoretical Domains Framework. His work set the stage for another MPH student, Rebecca Harper, to carry out a survey in Jordan to understand at a deeper level, barriers to recommending colorectal cancer screening by healthcare providers. Leveraging Caleb’s work, Rebecca is also preparing her thesis for publication.

EXAMPLE WORK EXPERIENCE

NIDI Study participants

Kait Stanhope GH MPH, as part of her GH work position, calculated infant growth data so this could be returned to Bolivian moms and their babies as part of a study on the relationship of nutrition and rotavirus vaccines in El Alto, Bolivia. Kait published this work as first author and is now a Social Epidemiologist at the Emory University School of Medicine. The full article is available here at the BMC library
