Katherine S. Virgo, Ph.D., FASCO, is currently Executive Vice President of the International Atlantic Economic Society, Managing Editor of the Atlantic Economic Journal and Editor-in-Chief of International Advances in Economic Research. She served the Society in numerous roles over the past 40 years beginning in 1978. From 1993-2012, she served as Associate Editor of the Atlantic Economic Journal and from 1995-2012 as Deputy Editor of International Advances in Economic Research. Dr. Virgo is also an Adjunct Professor, Department of Health Policy and Management, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Previous recent positions include: Managing Director, Health Services Research Program, American Cancer Society, Atlanta, Georgia; Professor, Department of Surgery, Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center; and Statistician, Surgical Service, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Saint Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Virgo obtained her B.S. in business administration from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Illinois in 1981, her M.B.A from the same university in 1983, and her Ph.D. in health services research specializing in economics and health care administration from Saint Louis University in 1991. Dr. Virgo’s research over the past three decades has been primarily in the cancer field focusing on surgical outcomes, clinical guideline development, secondary prevention, economic analysis, and health services utilization. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, seven book chapters, and co-edited two books entitled, Cancer Patient Follow up (first and second editions), and The Bionic Human: Health Promotion for People with Implanted Prosthetic Devices.
Dr. Virgo was named a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in June 2017 in recognition of her years of service to the organization. She previously served as a member of the ASCO Health Services Committee (HSC), the committee responsible for writing evidence-based guidelines for cancer care practice. Dr. Virgo was involved in updating the ASCO colorectal cancer surveillance guidelines, the development of recommendations for the management of androgen sensitive metastatic, recurrent, or progressive prostate cancer and, a clinical evidence review regarding cardiopulmonary late effects and the ongoing care of adult cancer survivors. She co-chaired an ASCO expert panel on second-line hormonal therapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer and recently co-chaired an ASCO expert panel updating the original guidelines for the initial management of non-castrate advanced, recurrent, or metastatic prostate cancer.
