About Instructional Design
Instructional designers wear an array of hats all under the broad umbrella of teaching, learning, and technology.
- Oversee the instructional design process for a course or group of courses, including project management, planning, design, production, evaluation, and iteration
- Provide user experience reviews for a course (How easy is a course to navigate? How organized are materials? What best practices should inform the structure and course outline?)
- Advise faculty on developing multimedia and video resources for courses using best practices and assist with planning, shooting, and editing videos
- Research and evaluate academic technology tools and platforms and how they can be integrated into content
- Help apply universal design and accessibility standards to courses, review courses for accessibility, and support faculty using the Canvas and UDOIT tools that identify accessibility issues in a course
- Create guides for learners and faculty to assist them in using various technologies
- Provide solutions for unique teaching situations which require educational technology as a part of the solution
- Search for relevant research on teaching and learning with technology
- Assist faculty with graphics and search for images; help faculty create improved page layouts and use typography to improve visual appeal and learning
