Dr. Muir is a population health scholar with interdisciplinary training in Demography, Epidemiology, and Sociology. His research focuses on social determinants of health in developing countries with a strong regional interest in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Much of his research examines societal level shocks as social determinants of child health and mortality.
For his dissertation, Dr. Muir examined intergenerational effects of traumas associated with the Khmer Rouge genocide and famine in Cambodia on subsequent child mortality. This research was informed by 10 months of fieldwork in Cambodia, during which time he gathered demographic and health-related data in collaboration with MIPRAoC, a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Cambodia. As a Ph.D. candidate at The Ohio State University, he was awarded a Presidential Fellowship for his dissertation research---the most prestigious award offered by the graduate school at OSU.
Dr. Muir has experience putting scholarship into practice through prior collaborative projects with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Clinton Foundation, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and the Population Division of the United Nations. He has also worked with grassroots NGOs while assisting refugees and victims of human trafficking.
