Karthikeyan  Bagavathy Shanmugam

Biostatistician, Sr

Karthikeyan Bagavathy Shanmugam, PhD, serves as a Senior Biostatistician specializing in Computational Exposomics within the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health at Emory Rollins School of Public Health. Prior to joining Emory, he worked as a Researcher at Örebro University, Sweden. His research focuses on the link between environmental chemical exposures and metabolic and non-communicable diseases. He conducts exposomics and metabolomics studies, utilizing data integration, pathway analysis, network analysis, and machine learning methods to link environmental exposures to disease phenotypes.

After earning his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from Bharathidasan University in 2017, he joined the Computational Biology Group at The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in Chennai, India. There, he contributed to the 'Computational Systems Toxicology' project, advancing computational models, developing workflows, and creating 5 knowledgebases in Toxicology and Environmental Health.

His doctoral thesis, titled 'Studies on species differences and species selectivity of xenobiotic degrading Cytochrome P450 enzymes of human, mouse, and rat using Systems Biology approach,' highlights his expertise. He also serves as a regular reviewer for journals like Environmental Science & Technology Letters, PLoS ONE, Heliyon, PeerJ, and Frontiers in Public Health.
