Collaboration
I was able to collaborate with an amazing professor from the Epidemiology and Global Epidemiology department. I reached out and connected to this faculty member and asked him to be my thesis mentor. He gave me tasks such as IRB proposals, survey assessment, survey creation and distribution. My thesis involved data collection and funding, so the entire process is a real-world example of the kind of work that goes into data collection, analyzing, and interpretation of an EPI surveillance project.
Research
Rollins is home to an internationally renowned Office of Research, which includes 26 centers of research. In 2023, Rollins researchers received nearly 490 research awards totaling over $179 million.
Our faculty, staff, and students are engaged in a wide variety of exciting projects that have a major impact on local, national, and international public health.
Examples include:
- The recently funded Center for cArdiometabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia (CARRS) is studying rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and related illnesses in South Asia.
- Researchers are investigating Georgia’s wastewater as a mechanism for detecting COVID-19 and monkeypox.
- The newly developed Emory/Georgia Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center is one of four NIAID-funded centers of its kind in the United States working to tackle the global elimination of TB.
- The Southern Liver Health Cohort is studying liver health and liver cancer in the South, with a focus on Black Americans.
- The multi-country Household Air Pollution Intervention Network Trial is investigating ways to decrease exposure to household air pollution, responsible for approximately 2.3 million deaths annually.
Other topics of research involve the impact of heat waves on pregnancy; HIV/AIDS and PrEP delivery and uptake; epidemiological modeling for COVID-19; mental health in schools; prison health; the impacts of climate change on mental health; sanitation and hygiene in homeless populations; reproductive health in the Southeast; stillbirth prevention; racial disparities in maternal mortality; intimate partner violence; women’s empowerment research; and more.

Explore
I conducted key informant interviews of CARE Ethiopia staff as part of an evaluation of gender transformative adaptations in their WASH programs.
Open to all Rollins MPH and MSPH students, the Global Field Experience (GFE) program enables students to apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to low-resource or high-disparity settings around the globe. Our students have traveled to more than 70 countries worldwide through various GFE placements. Students not only gain invaluable experiences, but can also use their GFE to fulfill applied practice experience requirements or to serve as the topic of their thesis or capstone projects. Network
In my experience, there is always a member of the Emory community ready to give me a boost over any hurdle I encounter. I try to do the same for others. Going to Rollins was one of the best things I ever did for myself.
Rollins is at the epicenter of public health in Atlanta and the nation. The proximity of the school and its faculty to the CDC as well as CARE, the American Cancer Society, The Carter Center, the Task Force for Global Health, the Arthritis Foundation, and state and local health departments offers students a wealth of opportunities for collaboration, learning, work placements, and mentorship before graduation. Rollins’ Professional Advancement & Student Experience Center, PASE, works closely with students to provide career coaching, job-seeking tools, and support throughout their graduate degree journey and beyond, offering such services as mock interviews, resume assistance, career fairs, workshops, networking events, and more. Attending Rollins provides students access to a global network of alumni from all 50 states and more than 90 nations who share a passion for public health, as well as links to organizations and research projects around the world.
